Robert Baker

Robert Baker was born in Birmingham, England in 1946 and began his studies at Birmingham College of Art. He continued his studies at St Martin’s and Chelsea Schools of Art. During his time in London he had work in the ‘Young Contemporaries’ and was chosen to participate in exhibitions at the Upper Whitechapel and Zwemmer Galleries. In 1974 he went to the USA for two years and held his first one person show there.

He moved to Ireland in 1976 where he taught BA and MA Painting at Limerick School of Art & Design. His work has been included in many of the selected group shows in Ireland, most notably in five EVA’s from 1985 to 1998 and he has shown individually in Ireland and in London.

In 2009 he retired from his teaching position and now spends long periods in Caunes-Minervois, Languedoc-Roussillon where he has a studio. His works are represented in many public and private collections in Ireland, England, USA, Spain and France.

    Bob, I did Foundation at LSAD with you in 1977, and from what I’ve seen since of Art Schools in various countries, what you taught us was the best basis for being able to interpret and understand the world in a visual way that we could possibly have got. In short, Bob, you were right and I was wrong – I’m happy to say!
